“On the Road to Mandalay”
Simon Spalding returns to Trent River Coffee Company on Saturday, February 8, presenting “On the Road to Mandalay”. The program combines songs, tunes, and storytelling to weave a magic carpet of exploration, adventure, and far-off lands and seas. The songs include works of and about Rudyard Kipling, Amelia Earhart, Stephen Foster, the US Navy, and Simon’s original "The Ballad of S.S Rex". The instruments include the familiar (violin, banjo) and the exotic (Chinese erhu and Tahitian ukulele). Trent River Coffee Company is at 208 Craven Street in New Bern. Thursday, February 20, in San Pedro, California
Whale & Ale
Simon Spalding & James Hendricks return to the Whale & Ale with their repertoire of sea chanteys, Celtic music, early ragtime/jazz, and two hundred years of popular music.Simon plays fiddle, octave mandolin, banjo, and erhu. James Hendricks sings and plays concertina, tinwhistle, piano, and other instruments. Simon and James will play from 7:00 to 10:30 pm. An admission fee may be charged – check with the venue for information. The Whale & Ale Pub is located at 327 West 7th Street, San Pedro. Friday, February 21 through Sunday, February 23, in Riverside, California
Riverside Dickens Festival
Simon will perform at the Riverside Dickens Festival, returning to the Friday evening Pub Night after a hiatus of several years. Simon will perform during Saturday and Sunday at the Dance Hall (teaching 19th-c. Country Dances), performing in the Ten Bells Pub (“sailor’s overtime”), and presenting a lecture of the transition from sail to steam in water transport. For more information on the event, stages, tickets, and show times, see the festival website, www.dickensfest.com, or contact them at info@dickensfest.com.

Saturday, March 8, in Grantsboro, North Carolina
Bluegrass & Gospel Festival at Pamlico Community College
Simon is directing this first-annual event in Pamlico County, NC. Plenty of local groups will be performing, including the Bethany Christian Church Gospel Ensemble, as well as Harbor Sounds, Marvin Walker, Gumbo Lily, 4EverAll, the Wilson Family, and many more. Banjos, guitars, mandolins, autoharps, fiddles, and many more instruments will fill the air with up-beat, up-tempo music. The event includes three stages and a “picker’s tent”. The festival will open at 11:00 am and continue until 4:00 pm or later, on campus at 5049 Highway 306, five miles south of the intersection of Highway 306 and NC 55 in Grantsboro. The Bluegrass & Gospel Festival is free to the public. For more information on the event, contact Leigh Younce at 252-249-1851, extension 3033. For more information about Pamlico Community College, check out the college website at www.pamlicocc.edu.

“A Musical History of the United States Navy”
This lecture-concert details the musical history of the Navy from its early origins. Covers the War of 1812, songs from both navies during the Civil War, and both World Wars. This lecture-concert paints a musical portrait of California’s rich maritime heritage. Historian-musician Simon Spalding will trace the history of seafaring, exploration, and maritime commerce in California, with special emphasis on Southern California.
